Description
A dedicated cable tester for audio and AV applications is an essential diagnostic instrument for any professional working with signal cabling. It provides rapid verification of continuity and correct wiring for a wide range of standard audio and video interfaces, including XLR, 6.35 mm (¼") and 3.5 mm jack, Speakon (4- and 8-pin), RCA/phono, RJ45, USB and more.
The tester is designed to identify open circuits, intermittent connections and incorrect wiring configurations that may result in audio dropouts, noise, distortion or video loss. It can also reveal broken or bent pins and miswired terminations, ensuring that all cables in use conform to the required pin-out and performance standards.
Operation is straightforward: both ends of the cable are connected to the appropriate ports on the tester, which then drives a test signal through each conductor. Status is indicated via LEDs, clearly showing whether each pin is correctly connected, open, shorted or crossed. This process typically takes only a few seconds, enabling rapid fault-finding in live, studio or installation environments.
By incorporating a cable tester into routine maintenance and troubleshooting workflows, professionals can quickly isolate cabling faults, minimise downtime and avoid unnecessary expenditure on replacement leads or service call-outs.
